2025 Was the UK's Warmest Year on Record: What the Data Actually Shows
Provisional Met Office figures make 2025 the UK's warmest and sunniest year since records began in 1884. Here is what that does and does not tell us.

The Met Office confirmed in January 2026 that 2025 was, provisionally, both the warmest and the sunniest year in the UK record. The mean temperature for the year was 10.09°C, the highest since the national series began in 1884. It is a striking number, and it is also easy to over-read. This piece sets out what the data supports.
What the evidence says
- Observed data: 2025 UK annual mean temperature of 10.09°C, provisionally the warmest on record (Met Office, 2 January 2026).

What does “warmest on record” actually mean?
The UK record runs from 1884, using a national series built from a network of stations. A record annual mean means the average of daily temperatures across the whole country, across the whole year, was higher than in any previous year in that series. It does not mean every month was hot, that every part of the UK broke a record, or that the hottest single day was recorded in 2025.
Why does one warm year matter?
Individually it does not matter very much. Any single year reflects weather as well as climate. What gives 2025 its weight is company: the UK’s warmest years cluster heavily in the recent past, and each new record arrives against a background of long-term warming rather than as an isolated spike. The honest framing is that 2025 is consistent with a warming trend, not that it proves one by itself.
What was different about 2025?
The Met Office’s assessment highlights a persistently warm, sunny year, with a notably dry and bright spring and further warm spells through the summer. The pairing of record warmth with record sunshine is the part worth noticing: sunshine and temperature records reinforcing each other in the same year points to sustained high-pressure conditions rather than a few extreme days doing the work.
What it means for UK organisations
Two practical consequences follow, and neither requires accepting any particular projection.
- Operational exposure is not hypothetical. Heat affects staff, buildings, cold chains, IT infrastructure and transport reliability. Organisations that have never modelled a hot-summer scenario now have a live one to work from.
- Baselines drift. Energy use, cooling demand and water use in a record-warm year will not look like a typical year. If you are setting a carbon baseline, say which year you used and why, a point that also matters for Carbon Reduction Plans under PPN 006.
What we are not claiming
We are not claiming 2026 will be warmer, that any particular weather event in 2025 was caused by climate change, or that the record was uniform across the UK. Attribution of individual events requires separate study, and the provisional annual figures may be revised slightly in the final assessment.
